Announcing new JIPLP Special Issue on Fashion and IP!

Back in 2018, the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice (JIPLP) was among the very first academic journals to dedicate a special issue entirely to the interplay between fashion and intellectual property (IP) law.

The relevant call for articles attracted dozens of submissions and the issue was a great success.

Since then, a lot has happened at the crossroads of IP and fashion: courses have multiplied and so have conferences, fashion law research has become more common and imaginative, and several professionals nowadays refer to themselves as fashion lawyers.

Now, JIPLP wants to investigate what’s new in the world of fashion and IP, by launching a new call for articles and special issue on fashion law, which will be released in late 2024 / early 2025!

If you are thinking of and/or researching a new issue, topic, line of case law, policy and legislative developments relevant to the fashion sector and wish to write on it, we want to hear from you!

Interested authors are invited to submit articles in the range of 4,000-7,000 words on a topic of their choice within this theme for consideration for publication in JIPLP.

Relevant articles must be submitted through the online portal, be in accordance with JIPLP house style, be previously unpublished, and carry the indication that they are for consideration for the special fashion law issue. Further to a desk review, all potentially suitable submissions will undergo peer review.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, 30 September 2024. No late submissions will be considered for this special issue.

For authors interested in discussing informally the topic of a possible contribution, please email the Editor of this special issue, Prof Dr Eleonora Rosati, and/or JIPLP Managing Editor, Ms Sarah Harris.

The Editor is also considering the possible organization of an online conference/meeting with the authors of the special issue after the special issue has been published.

JIPLP special issue to celebrate the first anniversary of the UPC

The Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice (JIPLP) is delighted to announce a special issue to celebrate the first anniversary of the Unified Patent Court (UPC). The special issue, which will be published later this year, will be jointly edited by (in alphabetical order) Stefano Barazza (JIPLP editor), Penny Gilbert (Powell Gilbert), Tilman Müller-Stoy (Bardehle Pagenberg), and Christopher Stothers (Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer).

Interested authors are invited to submit articles that focus on the lessons learnt during the first year of operation of the UPC. We are particularly interested in articles analysing substantive or procedural matters in light of the emerging case law of the UPC (e.g. transparency and public access to documents, provisional measures, service of documents, claim construction, bifurcation, language of proceedings, expert evidence, internal coherence/consistency, etc.). We also encourage contributions that, on the basis of the UPC experience so far, focus on broader aspects, such as litigation strategy, the role of the UPC in the global patent system, the relationship between the UPC and other courts/jurisdictions, preliminary evaluations of its effectiveness and overall functioning, or suggestions for improvements to the UPC system. While empirical and statistical studies are welcome, please note that these must be accompanied by a substantive legal analysis.

Articles should have a length comprised between 3,000 and 8,000 words (footnotes included) and comply with JIPLP author guidelines. Please note that JIPLP uses OSCOLA as its citation style.

The deadline for submissions, which can be only made through the JIPLP submission site, falls on the first UPC anniversary, 1 June 2024. No late submissions can be considered for this special issue.

JIPLP is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, so all the articles received will undergo a review process. In this sense, submission of an article will not automatically entail its acceptance for publication.

For any questions and/or to inquire about the suitability of a certain topic/angle, please contact JIPLP’s Managing Editor, Sarah Harris, by email.

We look forward to receiving your contributions!

JIPLP Special 'Image Rights' Issue: Call for Articles!

The protection of one's own image, likeness or voice can be achieved through different regimes.

Some countries recognize self-standing image/publicity rights, which can be enforced in different situations and even post mortem. Other countries do not have ad hoc rights, and protection can be obtained through a mix of other rights and remedies. So, for instance, copyright, trade marks, unfair competition, passing off, data protection/privacy, libel/defamation and new rights like the right to be forgotten might all be relevant.

At a time when the conversation around deepfakes has become so topical, models are accused of copyright infringement for posting images of themselves, and estates try to repress the unauthorized use of celebrities' image, the Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice (JIPLP) wishes to explore all these topics more in detail and in relation to different experiences and jurisdictions.

This is why it is launching a call for articles for a Special 'Image Rights' Issue that will be published in early 2020.

Interested authors are invited to submit articles in the range of 3,000-6,000 words on a topic of their choice relating to the protection of one's own image, likeness, voice, etc for consideration for publication in JIPLP.

Relevant articles must be submitted through the online portal, be in accordance with JIPLP house style, and carry the indication that they are for consideration for the special image rights issue.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, 16 September. No late submissions will be accepted.

If you are interested in discussing informally the topic of your contribution, please email Eleonora Rosati or Sarah Harris.

JIPLP Special Edition on IP in Africa - Call for articles

JIPLP is issuing a call for articles for an upcoming special issue of the journal, dedicated to intellectual property perspectives from Africa. The special issue will be curated and edited by our consulting editor Marius Schneider, who has recently posted a call for articles on our LinkedIn page (if you are not yet a member, we would be happy to welcome you on our carefully moderated and ever-growing group, where you can find out about our latest initiatives and take part in informal IP-related discussions and debates - to join us, just click here).

We hope that many of you will consider contributing to our special issue, helping readers from other jurisdictions familiarise with IP in the African context, its challenges, successes and peculiarities.

JIPLP Editor Marius Schneider calls for articles for a special edition of the Journal on IP in Africa which is due to be published in early 2017.
Africa – a continent of great dynamics and abundant creativity – is home to some of the fasted growing economies worldwide. The peer-reviewed Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice has a wide readership in Africa and so it has been decided to have a special issue on IP related subjects with a special focus on Africa.
The special issue seeks to cover all areas of IP. Pan-African articles are welcomed and it would be great to have articles on subjects of concern for Africa, such as access to medicine; traditional knowledge; good governance, the rule of law and IP; or plant variety rights. We do also welcome proposals on other subjects. The articles should be approximately three to six thousand words long (although there is some flexibility) and in perfect English (if necessary authors are requested to call on a professional proof reader). Final articles must be submitted by 30 October 2016.
Volunteers are invited to contact Marius by e-mail under office@ipvocateafrica.com to submit proposed subjects. Please do not yet write any articles without the approval of the Editor.
